Our Turning Points

What Shaped Us Into Who We Are Today

BridgeRoots began as a small community-led well-being initiative within Aarogyam UK, but it was the community itself that shaped its direction and identity. As participation grew, individuals from diverse cultural, linguistic, and social backgrounds shared experiences of isolation, disconnection, and the absence of spaces where they felt genuinely seen and understood. These early conversations revealed that people were seeking far more than activity-based support — they were seeking a place where they could feel connected, rooted, and able to find their own sense of belonging.

This understanding marked our first major turning point: evolving from simple well-being circles into a broader, culturally responsive, community-led support model. People needed continuity, familiarity, and shared spaces where they could return each week or each month — not only to receive support, but to feel anchored within a wider community that reflected their lived realities.

Hybrid models through WhatsApp and online groups became a second turning point. These platforms offered a sense of closeness and consistency, allowing members to connect in ways that felt natural and unobtrusive. For many, these digital spaces became places to express themselves safely, share challenges, and form friendships — especially for those facing health, mobility, or cultural barriers to attending in person. The ability to stay connected daily, even without physical presence, gave people a sense of rootedness that traditional services often lack.

The third turning point came through expansion across multiple cities. As individuals invited friends, relatives, and communities from Leicester, Birmingham, Nottingham, Manchester, Huddersfield, and York, it became clear that our model resonated widely. People were seeking the same things everywhere — connection, cultural understanding, emotional grounding, and the reassurance of belonging somewhere. This organic growth signalled the need to strengthen the structure around our work.

Community feedback also highlighted that one-off sessions were not enough. People needed predictable, ongoing support that they could integrate into their lives — a rhythm they could rely on. This led us to develop structured monthly gatherings and thematic pathways that offer deeper continuity and allow members to grow over time within a supportive environment.

As our scope and responsibilities grew, it became essential to formalise BridgeRoots with its own independent governance and identity. Transitioning into a dedicated CIC allowed us to honour the scale of our work, secure greater accountability, and respond more effectively to community needs, while still benefiting from the shared safeguarding and operational foundations established with Aarogyam UK.

Each of these turning points — from listening to lived experience, to expanding access through hybrid models, to creating sustained community pathways — has shaped BridgeRoots into the organisation it is today: a community-rooted, culturally responsive, and accessible support network where people can feel connected, grounded, and able to find a place that truly feels like home.
